I don’t watch much TV. I turn on the tube at night, mostly for background noise and partly to keep from talking to myself. (Kidding, of course. Sort of.) So, when you have a TV that still plays VCR tapes, it’s almost guaranteed you are not hosting the Super Bowl party. It’s good to have friends.

Team Tequila

Candles and Wax

Tucked away in an upstairs nook of Barrio Tequila Bar, it almost appears like we were summoning spirits. After 8 hours straight of meetings of an even longer workday, there was no spirit calling. That is, unless you count the call of my dos margaritas.

Fireside Chat

If you’re lucky at my office, your status meeting might turn into a fireside chat in the Great Hall. And some random trivia: the term fireside chat was coined on the date I celebrate my birthday. Except not the 1933 part.

I Work Out

Trigger Point
  365.16

New year’s resolutions like healthier eating and regular exercise are not that surprising to me. Yet, I was surprised to find them on my own list this year. Somehow my favorite routine to hit the gym 5-7 times a week had fallen out of favor, as I got into a new groove and had fewer desirable gym options along my short commute. And while I’ve returned to the home of the Pillsbury Dough Boy, I certainly have no intention of becoming one!

Today at work, I joined the BizicallyFIT Health Challenge with a team of coworkers. Maybe some competition will be my motivation. There are no easy solutions, no fast results and no substitutions for making balanced food choices, counting calories and exercising daily.

I’m making a more concerted effort to stay fit and resume my routine. With resistance bands, a pull-up bar and more, tonight it began. For realz. (Yes, I actually said that earlier today, and no, I have no idea why.)

How will you become a healthier you in 2012?

Pure Milk

Milk - J.J. Curry
365.04

My earliest memory of milk (no, we’re not going there!) was in Kindergarten. The teacher’s aide (and staff tooth extractor) would pour milk into 25 wax-coated cups after recess and tell us to “Drink your bubbles!” Which was more fun than it probably should have been.

Actually, milk has a special place in my family’s history. My namesake and great-grandfather, J.J. Curry, would milk cows twice a day and deliver bottles to homes around his South Dakota town. He was both a dairyman and farmer until 1935, when as my grandpa would tell it, J.J. came to a crossroad and had to decide “Was the family’s future in milk production or cornfields?” The outcome: a box of 5,000 unused milk caps and 77 years later, a family seed corn business that’s still going strong.

2012: Year of Rediscovery

 365.01
Spoonbridge & CherryFour months ago, I returned to live (and work) in one of my favorite cities, Minneapolis.

In the past six years, I earned my MBA, met many new friends, studied abroad in China and Chile, worked for two amazing brands, traveled the country and lived in Chicago.

I visited many times since 2005, though Minneapolis is not the same as when I left. Though, neither am I.

It’s the first time in 12 years that a geographic move doesn’t mean starting over. That’s why 2012 is a year of rediscovery.

Rediscovering Minneapolis/St. Paul,
… my music,
… friendships,
… adventures,
… my abs (gotta set goals, right?!)
… and all things familiar and new.

I hope to share stories along the way and a photo from each day (while becoming a better photographer.) The photo above is the popular Spoonbridge and Cherry in the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. Is it my best photo? Certainly not, but my hands were freezing, so this is the shot. The symbolism though is fitting for my year of rediscovery, which I’ll be taking one day (and one spoonful) at a time.

Middle C

In piano, middle C is the relative center of the keyboard. This blog, Middle C, will be a central place to share my passions…

  • My music.
  • My photography.
  • My travels.
  • My food.
  • My self.

I hope you’ll join me,
as I document my journey,
on this blog,
I call Middle C.
