Sonoma County

Chateau St Jean - Nina
    365.85

Nina, one of my friends since preschool, and I toured Sonoma County for some wine tastings, with stops at Chateau St. Jean, Benziger and Viansa wineries. We took some photos “senior portrait style” in the garden. The drive through the countryside was beautiful and wineries dotted the hillsides. Most all the wines we tried were great. When tasting wine, I learned that my nose is an instrument and that one should look for varietal character. Solid advice, I’m sure, though I still only have two indicators: tastes good, or it doesn’t. We had dinner in Berkeley with my friend Natasha, a fellow 3M summer intern from 2002, at Angeline’s for some Louisiana cookin’.

My friends’ daughter Erin smiles for the camera. It’s been an amazing four days in Chicago and visiting friends and former colleagues with stops in Elmhurst, Oak Brook, Lisle, Naperville, downtown, Wicker Park, Lincoln Park and Oak Park.

Oak Park is one of my favorite villages with its balanced mix of city and suburban charms. I attended Mass at my old church Ascension, and the choir sang with vibrant harmonies that elegantly rang from the choir loft to the nave and apse. After lunch at Poor Phil’s, my friends Jim and Melissa and I walked to Petersen’s Ice Cream, where they serve peppermint stick ice cream all year round. A deliciously sweet way to end a perfect weekend of reunions.

Art Faux Real

Lifelike
   365.56

Saturday morning included a visit to the Walker Art Center and its new exhibit, Lifelike. Contemporary art can be harder for me to absorb because my interpretation often calls me to question “What is art?” But, perhaps that’s precisely the point. While art certainly reflects the creativity and interpretation of the artist, a work of art also becomes something to be interpreted by viewers who observe it, react to it, admire it, and maybe even question it. Based on each viewer’s life experiences and creativity, art can have vastly different interpretations and meanings. And in that sense, the study or reflection on a work of art is as relevant as the art itself.

Art museums are important because they not only give visitors the best possible stage to see the art, but also experience the art. You can better appreciate the scope of a large work, or the fine detail of a painting or sculpture, by walking around it from different vantage points and seeing it three-dimensionally. Museums are also a shared experience, if you take notice to watch and listen to others as they interpret the art in their own unique ways. Museum staffer Carol was on hand to share info about the Lifelike exhibit, the museum itself, as well as offer tips on the best vantage point for photos. It’s clear she has enthusiasm for the arts.

I left the museum with an increased appreciation for contemporary art, and I’ll be back for more than Lifelike as a new, card-carrying member. If you’re in the Twin Cities, you can visit the Walker Art Center Tuesday-Sunday, on Target Free Thursday evenings, or Free First Saturdays.

En route to my car, I stopped in the Cowles Conservatory to warm up a bit and snap a few pics. More photos below.

While the adults entertained themselves at a post-Valentine’s Day party, two-and-a-half year old Marin settled in with some iPod music and videos in the middle of it all.

TGIT

TGIT
   365.47

TGIT is not quite the same as in grad school, when no class Friday’s were the norm. Nonetheless, some coworkers and I celebrated with beer, wine, wontons (recipe below) and fun conversation at Joe’s Loring Kitchen.

Today was a reflection in habits, as this past Monday we began our Team Fitness Challenge in the office. I’m determined to re-establish my fitness routine, and I have 10 team members to hold me accountable. Some free advice: workouts are best done before happy hour. But hey, I still got in a 4.5 mile run!

Wonderful Wontons

1 1/4 c. grated cheddar
1 1/4 c. grated jack
1 c. ranch dressing
small can black olives – chopped
1 tsp. ground red pepper
1 pkg wonton wrappers

Cook and drain sausage. Mix ingredients. Put wontons in a sprayed mini muffin tin. Bake at 350 for 5 minutes. Fill the wontons with mixture and bake 8 minutes.

Colorful Kicks

Josh

This is my friend Josh. He has crazy colorful duds and a pep in his step. Josh works in fashion, color is his game and no one would expect anything less. Because this spring, Color Changes Everything. We were the last few to leave the office, and Josh offered to kick up his feet for a photo.

Hop’s Salon

Hop's Salon

Moving back to Minneapolis has led to unexpected but happy reunions. Like Hop Bui. I first met Hop in 2001 when she owned U Salon in a storefront below my University Village apartment. She cut and styled my hair for the following four years and two music albums, until I left for grad school. From my moves to South Bend and Chicago to Hop’s move with her family to Houston, we’re both back in Minnesota. Hop now has a new salon in Dinkytown. And if you ask me, it’s a cut above the rest.

Minnesota Muskies

Puzzled. That best describes my reaction on entering the Target Center to watch the Minnesota Timberwolves and instead finding the Muskies. Did I miss something? Am I at the right stadium? Turns out, tonight was the first night the Timberwolves are wearing throwback jerseys of the Minnesota Muskies, to honor a basketball team from Minnesota’s past (1967-68). This photo captured a Minnesota three-pointer, though the Pacers would win 109-99. Thanks Target for the suite seats.

Hi, my name is @JoeJCurry, and I have a social media #addiction. Depending on who you ask, that may not be far from the truth! However, considering social media is part of my job, it’s no different than other folks’ curiosity for their careers. Today in Dallas was a reunion of sorts for people like me–people who work in a converging space of communications, marketing and technology.

Every couple months, my pioneering peers and I turn off our digital devices and meet face-to-face to talk ideas, swap solutions & success stories, and rally each other in our goals. It’s energizing. It’s humbling. It’s even a bit therapeutic. Over the past three years, I’ve not only been fortunate to attend 8 sessions with these extended colleagues; I can count many of them as friends.
