Stone Arch Night

Stone Arch Bridge

Sometimes my plan for the daily photo doesn’t pan out, which is how I ended up trekking through Mill Ruins Park at 10:15pm Sunday night with my camera and tripod to capture the Stone Arch Bridge. (Also seen here.) Surprisingly, there were a couple dozen people milling around (no pun intended) and even 6-7 runners, who appeared to appreciate the cooler night air.

Dandelion Fountain

In between seven hours of The Spots bootcamp (Target’s choir) and a summer soiree with coworkers, I stepped into Loring Park for a quick photo of the Dandelion Fountain. The sun broke through the trees and clouds at just the right moment to spray the fountain with light. Built in 1975, this fountain known as the Berger Fountain is a must-see in the spring and summer months.

Meet Cuya, a sled dog from Denali National Park.

(Yes, I took this photo last August, but I needed a breather and besides, this photo is way more interesting than anything I did today.)

Whitney Bridge

    365.135

Sometimes, getting the photo you want is part patience and part magic. The Irene Hixon Whitney Bridge is a well-recognized bridge that spans 17 lanes of traffic (I-94, Hennepin and Lyndale Avenues) and connects the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden with Loring Park. This bridge has been on the beginning and tail end of my running route the past three months, and I’ve been studying the effect of shadows. I was standing on the bridge for about 20 minutes, when the sun literally popped from behind the clouds, and my photo was lit with the desired effect for about a minute. And bonus, I got a runner in there for perspective.

Sonoma County

Chateau St Jean - Nina
    365.85

Nina, one of my friends since preschool, and I toured Sonoma County for some wine tastings, with stops at Chateau St. Jean, Benziger and Viansa wineries. We took some photos “senior portrait style” in the garden. The drive through the countryside was beautiful and wineries dotted the hillsides. Most all the wines we tried were great. When tasting wine, I learned that my nose is an instrument and that one should look for varietal character. Solid advice, I’m sure, though I still only have two indicators: tastes good, or it doesn’t. We had dinner in Berkeley with my friend Natasha, a fellow 3M summer intern from 2002, at Angeline’s for some Louisiana cookin’.

Chicago Cultural Center - Tiffany dome
    365.76

Home to the world’s largest Tiffany dome, today’s Chicago Cultural Center opened in 1897 as the first Chicago Public Library. The Tiffany dome is approximately 38 feet in diameter and spans more than 1,000 square feet. It contains some 30,000 pieces of glass in 243 sections held within an ornate cast iron frame. If you find yourself in the Loop in Chicago, it’s worth a quick visit at Michigan Ave and Washington Street, and it’s free.

Tiffany stained glass - Marshall Fields, Chicago
     365.68

Tiffany Globe, designed and assembled by Tiffany Studios New York, 1907

Each globe contains 487 milky yellow opalescent glass pieces configured in a style Louis Comfort Tiffany called “iridescent luster.” Once part of a grand Tiffany ceiling at Marshall Field’s State Street Chicago store. My Grandma Curry once worked in that Chicago store selling swimsuits. In the summer of 2006, I lived on State Street in Chicago, half a block from that store. I then lived in Chicago (suburbs) for four years. Today, I work for the company that, for a time, owned Marshall Field’s. Full circle.

Stained glass windows, St. Olaf Catholic Church.

In other news, Target Style and celebrity stylist June Ambrose today helped me answer #whattowear on a first date with this “if preppy went rogue” look from Target. Which is nice and fun. 🙂 Except I’ve probably never gone rogue a day in my life.

Today’s photo hunt was a quick one. My friend Carly says you shouldn’t have to look too far to find something interesting to shoot. And so, here are the windows next door.
